Tricks & Tips for teachers 3.19.15

Good Morning!
Happy Thursday!
(I am on SPRING BREAK!)
Haven’t actually HAD A BREAK YET..
.been helping with a school project..
BUT…TODAY
I AM ON SPRING BREAK!
 WAHOOOOO!!!
OK…sorry…back to bloggy world!
I am linking up with Becca @ Foxwell Forest

So….
Here goes.
How do you practice MATH FACTS?
We have created 28 addition & subtraction pages with 40 problems on each page.
Each student starts on LEVEL 1 ( addition ).
This is a 3 minute TIMED test.
I set the timer for three minutes & say
“READY, SET..GO!!!”
They are soooo excited for timed tests!
IT IS SILENT!
(They have figured out..the more you talk..the SLOWER you go,)
When the timer goes off..
DING! DING! DING!
I say ” PENCILS UP!”
They hold their pencil over their head…STOPS EVERYTHING!
Then I go around to each student…
either I take their paper to correct ( later )..
OR
I mark where they are done  &
they put it in their cubby to take home & practice!
We then have a discussion… ( oral mini lesson )
…What is easier counting on fingers, drawing dots, counting ON?
…If you have to put down your pencil to count…is it faster or slower?
…Are you getting BETTER??? That’s our GOAL!
…How can we get BETTER …FASTER…??
…What should I do with this test , if I didn’t finish? ( PRACTICE!)
Then…
I correct the finished ones…
They have to get 100% to pass!
If they get 100%..they get the next test ( the next day or so).
Test 1 is addition, Test 2 subtraction, & so on & so on..
Then I graph their results on my chart.
As we go on…we celebrate success’…not just passing scores
BUT
INCREASING scores!
Kids who are struggling…we celebrate GETTING BETTER!
Do all students’ increase scores…NO…
Are they getting better? YES!
And we…PRACTICE ON!
Here area few pics… 🙂
Sorry blurry…
This is the last one #28…What happens after they pass this one in 3 minutes?
They start back at number 1..IN TWO MINUTES!
AND on & on!

Here is my file..
Don’t judge! Messy!  Well-used & LOVED!
I keep at least 20-30 copies of each in file.
I use recyled paper ( stuff on the back )…they LOVE IT!

Here is the class graph.
I just write the date they PASS ( 100% CORRECT ).
When I pass out the new test..
I put them face down , kiddos write their name on the back, & we say
READY, SET, GO!!!!
PS…I don’t start timed tests until Quarter 2…
Need to TEACH IT before I TEST IT!
What ever assessment you use ( their are LOTS)
remember the goal is to
GET BETTER!
( There is NO PERFECT…don’t set them up!)
JUST GET BETTER! 🙂

We do daily "Mad Minutes" in our classroom for facts and the kids LOVE them and LOVE making progress! I love your reminder that growth and progress is what is important! And so glad that you are keeping it real with your files girlfriend!! We all know that the struggle is real! 🙂

    Thanks again for linking up!!
