Nibits for Newbies 2.7.16 Valentine Bags

If it’s Sunday

It must be time for….

NIBITS  for NEWBIES!

This week’s theme…

  VALENTINE  CARDS

It’s that time of year…

Kindness cards, Friendship Celebrations, Valentine Parties

Whatever YOUR site chooses to call it.

IT’S  HERE!

The time of year when we color, cut & glue

to show our FRIENDS  that WE LOVE THEM!

Pinterest has LOTS ( I mean LOTS )

of Valentine IDEAS!

These are a few from one of my collaborative pinterest boards..

Click on link to follow..

https://www.pinterest.com/firstgradeflair/valentines-day-elementary-resources/

( Click on this pic for a FREEBIE on my blog)

WE LOVE VALENTINE’S DAY!

But WHAT TO DO WITH ALL OF THOSE VALENTINE CARDS???

How to MANAGE them ALL?

2 days before our “Friendship Celebration”..

*we are NOT allowed to call it a VALENTINE celebration

(seperation of CHURCH/STATE thing..)

we make our BAGS!

Now I have done LOTS & LOTS & LOTS of different types of  card holders…

(Again…THANK YOU PINTEREST!)

But I think the MOST important thing to remember is…

WHERE ARE YOU GOING TO PUT THEM?

If you have 25 students…these take up a LOT of space!

So the choice is yours!

Just remember…

ALWAYS…ALWAYS…make 1 extra!

(That student who was absent on CRAFTY day…will want a bag on PARTY day!)

ALSO….

Have your kiddos write THEIR NAME ONLY on the cards.

One in each bag…PLOP..PLOP…PLOP!

NO need to MATCH their friend’s name to the bag.

One for EVERYONE!

When we open our bags…we say THANK YOU to each person who gave us a card!

MANNERS COUNT!

So good luck.

Check your CRAFTING SUPPLIES.

Find our where you want them be..they will be there for two whole days.

AND enjoy!

Don’t forget to make one for yourself!

I am sure your kiddos will have “TREATS” for you too!

Happy Friendship DAY!  🙂

Nibits for Newbies 1.31.16 DO YOU SCOOT?

If it’s Sunday…

It must be time for…

NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!!

This week’s theme…

DO YOU SCOOT???

HUH?

Do….  YOU…  SCOOT?????

Ok..

Have you ever PLAYED SCOOT???

Here is a game to get 100% of YOUR students ENGAGED!

My Kiddos LOVE  SCOOT  games..

Here are the basics:

Materials needed:

Game cards, task cards, pictures, flash cards, or multiple pages for review.

AND

A student page for responses.

Each student needs their OWN page.

Can be a pre-printed one, or blank.

The main idea is:

The teacher places different “tasks” on student desks.

The student’s walk around the room and respond to  the task on their papers.

Some teacher use a timer ( 1 minute per “station”) or FREE FOR ALL!

MY KIDDOS LOVE LOVE LOVE this!

Here are some examples…

We used this packet to play.

The CLOCK cards are the packet.

NO laminating needed!

I just place them in clear report sleeves…or Zip Lock bags when I need more!

Each card has a DIFFERENT  LETTER in the Top LEFT corner..

see the “V”????

Students walk around the classroom ( this time with a partner )

to find the cards.

We just used a blank page, folded it into 12 squares, and gave each one a LETTER.

I told them NOT to put their squares in ABC order.

WHY?  That way ALL kids are not at the same card at the same time!

Mix it up!

They found the 12 cards matching THEIR CHOSEN LETTERS!

We are working on time to the hour & half hour.

THEY LOVED THIS!

LOTS of discussion, helping each other, and giggles!

Check out PINTEREST…LOTS OF SCOOT GAMES!

I know you will enjoy!

Have fun!

If it’s SUNDAY

It’s time for

NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!

This Week’s Theme…

Teaching TIME!

Yes…the dreaded

CLOCK!

Common core standards for Grade 1:

Tell and write time.

Tell and write time in hours and half-hours

 using analog and digital clocks.

Pretty easy? Right?

NOT!

Time to the hour…they usually get ( after some practice )

BUT…

Half – HOUR?  UGH!!!

I HATE THAT HOUR HAND!

They struggle with the hour hand BETWEEN two numbers.

( DO I GO FORWARD?  BACKWARD?  GUESS?? )

And so…

We make clocks!

LOTS OF CLOCKS!

AND

we practice….EVERY DAY!

Pinterest has MULTITUDES of ideas to help!

ME?

Here are a few of my own…

Hand done..by kiddos

from my

 MONKEY MATH

 Year LONG Math  Packet

And HERE is a FREEBIE for YOU

CLOCKS!

Kiddos MATCH the Analog & Digital Clocks!

ENJOY!

Nibits for Newbies 1.17.16 I ALMOST QUIT!

If it’s SUNDAY

It’s time for

NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!

This week’s topic…

I ALMOST QUIT!!!!

What a WEEK!

For those of you who don’t know me,

I teach first grade at a low socioeconomic,

high gang neighborhood,

TITLE  1  ( low performing  ),

MULTI languages,

and VERY NEEDY FAMLIES!

I have been at this school for 16 years.

All in grade 1.

I LOVE my school.

I LOVE my job!

I just can’t let go of some things.

I work with kids from the VERY best..

( I have had a student who got a FULL RIDE SCHOLARSHIP to HARVARD!)

She was amazing in grade 1…and amazing when I watched her graduate from high school.

AND…

I have taught kids who have been “lost” in the gang world

and I have never heard FROM or ABOUT them again.

One of my “lost souls” is now a paraprofessional at our school!

Proud teacher here…he turned it around & is MAKING IT!

So my problem isn’t the CLASSROOM part.

I just can’t quit trying.

I can’t leave my emotions at the door.

And it is making me ILL.

I have a student who is destructive.

He is a time-bomb waiting to explode.

BAD family.

NO support.

Mean, angry child.

Parent refuses to get help for him.

Easier to “look away”.

I can’t.

I tried.

And now…he is trying to destroy my classroom,

my students, and me.

I let him get to me.

I let him question myself.

What am I doing wrong?

Why can’t I help him?

Where did I mess up?

Maybe I don’t “have it” anymore…..

Maybe it’s time to find something else….

And so…

I LET HIM GET INTO MY HEAD!!!!

I wasn’t sleeping…

I kept trying to CHANGE things

( classroom set up, behavior plans, groupings, schedules, etc..etc…etc..)

and my other “littles” were suffering.

I knew it.

But I kept “trying” to find that 1 thing.

That 1 thing that would bring him into OUR world.

Peacefully, calmly, without cussing, hateful words, destroying papers, desks, etc.

We KEEP TRYING!

THAT’S WHAT WE DO!

Now…

MY school support is AMAZING.

Admin, psychologist, staff, etc, etc, etc…

GOT MY BACK!

BUT..

things take TIME.

I am trying to survive TOMORROW!

I don’t have TIME!

I have IST’d…RTI’d…Behavior planned myself to pieces!

I have MORE DATA than LESSONS!

Nothing.

NADA.

NOPE.

And so…

I forgot the MOST important thing about teaching.

The OTHER students!

They have hung in there with me.

They hug me when I am EMOTIONALLY drained!

They write me LOVE notes

and KINDNESS cards!

And …they are learning!

He has NOT hurt them!

Their scores are climbing!

So…I am letting go.

I am letting go of the realization

that ALL kids can learn.

He will learn.

He will get help.

He is  a survivor.

It may be this year.

It may be next year.

Mental illness DOES start young.

I have SEEN it.

I have LIVED it.

I am a survivor.

And so.

I WILL NOT  QUIT!

I LOVE  my job!

I am doing lesson plans.

We have Valentine’s to make, Chinese New Year, the President’s….

We have reading groups where we talk, and giggle together!

We have math where we GOT THIS!

And so…

I think we will PAINT!

( Always makes ME happy!)

 🙂

Thanks for the “vent “!

Happy 3 day weekend!

As MLK says…

“I HAVE A DREAM!”

NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!

This week’s theme…

MAKING  MEMORIES!

Short & sweet…

This GMA takes pictures!

LOTS OF THEM!

I have  HUGE tubs FULL!

Someday my 4 kids and 4 grandkids will have to decide which ones

THEY want!

I LOVE going through the pictures, reliving vacations, people who have come & gone, etc.

So…the holidays are HERE!

MAKE MEMORIES…and take LOTS of PICTURES!

Here’s my fun ones…

ENJOY!

If it’s SUNDAY..

It’s time for

Nibits for Newbies

This week’s THEME….

First Grade Writing

So…we have taken the step  jump  LEAP into writing

NON-FICTION.

As a Title 1 teacher with half of my class CELDT Levels 1&2 ( low English)

I am ALWAYS trying to give my kids more vocabulary, visual clues, and

FRONTLOAD information…before we WRITE!

So this week…was

REINDEER  WEEK!

I was  going for REAL REINDEER.

We read books, watched VIDEOS, did real research ( yes, ONLINE!)

We even attempted to watch the

REINDEER.CAM

(Can’t show kiddos in my district…TOO MUCH SANTA!)

I know…don’t go there!

So …I kept it real! ONLY REAL REINDEER!

I was going for NON-FICTION!

They did great!

As an adult I felt they had mastered a LOT of information!

What do reindeer LOOK like?

Where do they LIVE?

What do they EAT?

( One of our movies mentioned MUSHROOMS…

BOY did they pick up on that!)

And then…. what makes them different (special ) from

other ANIMALS?

Here are some of our writings…

(Don’t judge….we have NOT edited for CONVENTIONS..

Just  CONTENT!!  🙂

Sorry pics are turned…

Can’t get them to TURN! UGH!

No where…no how…

did I   MENTION

SANTA  or   RUDOLPH!

99%  of my student’s wrote that the important thing about REINDEER is…

THEY PULL SANTA’S  SLEIGH

AND

THE LEADER IS…RUDOLPH!

And THAT is NON FICTION!

HAHAHAHA

But that is their

 PRIOR  KNOWLEDGE!

SO CUTE!

They brought it into their writing!

Let their VOICES be heard!

And so…

ADULTS  BE  AWARE!

The little ones WILL be HEARD!

I LOVE TEACHING FIRST GRADE!

They make me GIGGLE!

Enjoy the HOLIDAYS!

Merry Christmas to YOU and YOURS!

Nibits for Newbies 12.6.15

If it’s Sunday…

It’s time for

NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!

This week’s theme…

KINDNESS  CARDS!

Kindness cards are nothing new.

But, I think in the classroom they can take on new meaning.

We have been doing kindness cards for years.

I work in a Title 1 school where the holidays can be very…different.

Santa DOESN’T come to EVERY child’s house.

A new pair of shoes is….MAGIC!

So please…be very careful when you talk of the

“JOLLY OLD MAN” bringing

ALL

the “good little girls and boys” presents!

( What if he doesn’t? Were they ‘bad”?)

So I leave the “gifts” to the parents.

Instead…we give kindness cards.

We start the last two weeks before

Christmas.

Together, we brainstorm a list of kindness “traits” we see.

We make a list for school and at home.

This list stays up until vacation!

(Sometimes ALL year!)

Tomorrow we begin!

Our sequence goes like this:

Day 1…

Write a kindness card to a friend in OUR class.

DON’T write your name on it.

(Secret Santaish)

Put it in their cubby before we go home.

*Teacher secret….

I make up a LOT of extras the night before.

Make sure EVERYONE gets the first one! 🙂

Day 2…

or a couple of days later…

Write a kindness card to a friend in ANOTHER class.

DO write your name on it.

Hand it to them at recess!

Day 3…

or a couple of days later…

Write a kindness card to an ADULT  at our school- not the teacher!

DO write your name on it.

Hand it to them at recess!

Day 4…

or a couple of days later…

Write a kindness card to YOUR PARENTS or GRANDPARENTS!

DO write your name on it.

Take it home & give it to them with a HUG!

Day 5…

or a couple of days later…

Write a kindness card to an ANYONE at our school!

DO write your name on it.

Hand it to them at recess!

They get SOOO excited!

Both to write one…and to receive one!

( I always make sure I have extras…NO ONE wants to go home empty-handed!)

So…here is a FREEBIE for YOU.

SPREAD  THE  KINDNESS!

 ENJOY!

It’s time for

NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!

This week’s theme…

Grouping  for  Guided  Reading

Relax….this is NOT a post about

Guided Reading.

LOTS OUT THERE!

This is a quick peek at

HOW I organize my FLUID, reading groups…

FOR ME!

It’s ALL about me!

Keep my life organized..

QUICK &  EASY!

Here is my Guided Reading Planner…

I know…

SOPHISTICATED..

(NOT!)

A file folder…laminated…

4 parts …

 ( I can ONLY reach 4 groups  a day)

Hook & Loop …AKA  VELCRO

DOTS!

( MY new  BFF!)

and names.

I started to make colored names for groupings…

( with my next BFF….WASHI TAPE! )

DON’T!

The groups change (hopefully)

and they change QUICKLY!

I like colors…the mixed colors don’t bother me.

If mixed colors in one group bother you…

USE ALL ONE COLOR! 🙂

And so..each Friday

After assessments…Running Records, observations, etc..etc..etc..

I change my groups by moving a name to another DOT!

Because the folders are laminated, I can make NOTES to myself on the sides!

Change levels…Add  supplemental notes

( We added Acelerated Reader to my high two groups on Friday!)

and so…

Works for me!

PORTABLE  TOO!

I hope this helps you

KEEP IT REAL!

Happy Teacher…Happy Class!

See you next week!

How do YOU keep track of YOUR Reading Groups??

SHARE  in comments! 🙂

If it’s Sunday..

It’s time for

NIBITS FOR NEWBIES

Today’s theme….

DIY  Christmas gifts from teacher to students!

(  NO $$$$,  and   fast,   and  EASY! )

YES!!!!

Do YOU give your student’s Christmas gifts?

I have been teaching for 25 years.

I have 4 children, 4 grandchildren, and a large family.

I  DON’T have a LOT of “extra” money for gifts for my students.

25 kids …costs a LOT!

So what to do?  What to do?

I have tried LOTS of things over the years…

Books,  gloves,  hot chocolate, etc., etc.

This has to be the BEST!

ALL kids LOVE to draw.

They LOVE big, chunky crayons!

MAKE THEM!

Use the broken crayons from your classroom…

AND

BEG OTHER TEACHERS FOR THEIRS!

Teachers LOVE to get rid of broken crayons.

Then …start searching stores ( including thrift stores, Goodwill, etc )

for silicone shaped candy molds!

If not… my BFF…AMAZON PRIME!

You are NOT making food…

They can be “recycled” …wink , wink!

I found some snowmen, trees, and gingerbreadmen at Goodwill for $1.00 !!

Now what?

Have the kids…YES  THE KIDS…take off ALL the paper  wrappers!

DON’T  TELL  THEM  WHY!  🙂

Paper wrappers …I did them MYSELF!

Should have had kids do them…they would have ENJOYED IT! 🙂

Gingerbreadman

Christmas Trees

Lots DONE… FAST…EASY..

I think I may have make some more….Santa might want some for

Grandkids STOCKTINGS! 🙂

SMART  SANTA!

If you don’t have a LOT (it takes a LOT) of broken crayons,

ask for donations from other teachers.

Bring the unwrapped  broken  crayons  home.

Break up the crayons into LITTLE  chucks!

Put them into the molds…press them down a lttle.

Place molds onto a cookie sheet.

Bake 60 minutes (1 hour) at 200 degrees.

Take them out & let them cool.

If rushed…PUT THEM IN THE FREEZER!

(Don’t POP them out…until they are SOLID.)

POP them out…

and   VOILA!

Chunky, multicolored, crayons for each student.

I wrap each in a clear baggie…a little name tag…and a HUG!

Teacher LOVE!

If it’s SUNDAY..
It’s time for
NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!
Today’s theme…
Veteran’s DAY!
We are a military family.
Army & Navy.
We have heard stories from WWII to Korea to today.
Great Grandpa’s, Grandpa’s, Dad’s, cousin’s, sons, daughter-in-law…
WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!
In MY classroom
I spend a lot of time discussing MY SON
ACTIVE US NAVY…
and why it is SOOO  important to say
“THANK YOU” for their service.
When he was on a 7 MONTH deployment…
He was married to an active US NAVY  wife
AND they had …MY GRANDCHILD!
( She is sooooo  cute!)
But he left them behind to live on a ship and PROTECT US!
So how can we say THANK YOU?
We send letters, pictures, stories, and cutsie art projects.
I try to send things at least once a month.
This month’s ideas….
( Pinterest is GREAT FOR THIS!)
Next   Month……
Just a little something to remind them of
All of us at home who CARE!
My son  is no longer on a ship…
so we send things to friends & family who are
ACTIVE soldiers & sailors.
AND
We send things to the local Veteran’s HOSPITAL.
All who serve and who have served…deserve a THANK YOU!
I searched GOOGLE for a local VA Hospital address..
takes a little searching, but time WELL spent!
ALL  will appreciate.
Parents who cannot ( or are not) with their own kids
appreciate a little art project or note from a child, any child.
A little smile, a little laugh, a warm fuzzy from home.
No need to put names on them.
Here are a few addresses …
To those Veteran’s ( active or inactive )
AND THEIR FAMLIES..
THANK  YOU!
