So as we RECHARGE..

And yes FOLKS…YOU NEED TO RECHARGE!

Give yourself a break!

WE WORK HARD!

It’s OK to say NO!

No…I don’t want to go to….

NO…I don’t want to go out tonight… ( I plan on going to bed EARLY!)

NO…I don’t want to …

YES!

I just want to stay in my COMFY clothes ( PJ’s, sweats. yoga pants, etc)

I want to eat JUNK FOOD

and

I am binge watching whatever the remote lands on..

I AM NOT MAKING ANY DECISIONS!

YIPPEE!!!  Spring Break!

Now…I am a GMA!

After a few “ME” days…

I am having 3 ( of 4 ) of our grandkids to spend a couple days!

I am NOT wasting a minute of it!

IN COMES PINTEREST……………..

St. Patrick’s Day  GREEN FEAST!

We are having a party!

and…  PAINTING!

Painting CLOTHES…. Painting T-Shirts…TUTUS!

I AM SOOOO  EXCITED!

PINCH ME!

NO!

I’ll be wearing MY GREEN TUTU!

HAHAHA

Now…I am NOT making ALL of these…

Just getting ideas! 🙂

Of course…Corned Beef & cabbage!

And GPA’s HAT!

And then..

Gma & Gpa will…..

SLEEP  FOR  A  WEEK!!!  🙂

So…enjoy YOUR time OFF!

I know I will!

Get Your Hands DIRTY!

Get Your Hands DIRTY! 🙂

The SUN is SHINING!
The birds are “chirping”.
My chickens are laying EGGS!
It’s almost SPRINGTIME folks!
We gotta get ready!
So …how?
What do I do first? Then? Next?
( Sound familiar? )
We in NORCAL are ready to…
GET OUR HANDS DIRTY!
We have 3 raised gardens…
And an extra large garden.
 Yes…We have our own windmill.
( NO..it does NOT pump water…BUT IT LOOKS SO COOL!)
Last year.. 12 ft. tall SUNFLOWERS!
Corn, tomatoes, garlic, onions, tomatillos, cilantro, peppers,
green beans, squash, pumpkins, grapes
In the beginning…(sunflowers)
And our helpers…
Our granddaughters ( & new grandson) LOVE DIRT!
Best friends with WORMS!
(Put your coffee grounds into your garden…worms LOVE THEM!)
We also have 2 chickens..
Snow white (Black..I know…SNOW WHITE has BLACK HAIR)
and Rapunzel (  She used to have yellow feathers..)
Granddaughters named them..
Thank You Disney!
We also live in the suburbs…NO FARM!
We just grow what we use & use what we grow!
So Valentine’s DAY is usually the “day”.
START YOUR SEEDS!
HUH?
How? Where?
HUH?
We use seed starter kits.
( Lowes, Home Dept, etc)
We put one seed in each “pot”, water daily,
and keep in the sun..
INDOORS!
(Usually on MY kitchen table for a while). 🙁
As the seeds sprout…we move them into a small greenhouse outside for acclimation.
As the seeds gain height and leaves…
We plant them in the garden(s).
We try to plant/ sprout / acclimate/ plant in the garden
at different times.
That way we always have produce ripening.
I also have herbs:
cilantro, parsley, basil, rosemary, chives, mint
growing year round.
This year we are trying something new.
( In addition to what we already have..)
Straw Bale Gardening!
Researching it now.
Looks promising!
(I think I may propose this one at school too).
Great for growing plants in a small space!
OK..then what?
We have ALL of this summer produce!
What do we do with it?
(You can only eat so much…so fast!)
Well…
Hubby cans!
(Yes…HE  CANS!)
* This year SANTA brought him a new pressure canner!
Happy hubby…Happy  wife! 🙂
Peaches…yummy!
Salsa, spaghetti sauce, tomatoes.
ALL kept in storage for WINTER!
And me?
I dehydrate..I dehydrate WELL!
I Love my dehydrator!
My new LOVE is
PERSIMMONS!
I can’t wait to dehydrate them this fall.
Persimmons to snack on..ALL YEAR LONG!
YUMMY!
And so…
it’s time..
( Actually..we are just starting seeds..you see,
The farmer’s time table for planting is:
“When you can put your bare behind on the soil
& it is WARM..
time to plant!”
I haven’t actually tried that…
I  think I will wait for a little more SUN and make a good GUESS!
It’s almost time!
GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY!  🙂

I Love Pinterest…Sort of

OMG!

There are SOOOOO  many wonderful things on PINTEREST!

I have THOUSANDS of pictures

of things

I want to make, create, cook, send to others, etc, etc, etc…

So  this weekend…

I jumped in!

Now I must preface this…

I don’t cook much.

Hubby is the master chef

I clean. I clean well!

So….as an educated adult…I CAN FOLLOW A RECIPE!

Sort of.

Our family cookie exchange is coming up.

I thought it would be CUTE

to have a CENTERPIECE of lollipops

for ALL of the kids to take home.

SO…

Here is what I wanted to make

LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE!

OK.

I CAN DO THIS!

I went to my favorite

WALLY  MART

and got my supplies!

Hubby wanted to know WHY I was buying

100 candy canes in November!

BECAUSE I CAN! 🙂

So here is my day…

Get out candy canes  & sticks.

Lay on waxed paper.

MAKE SURE THE STICKS TOUCH THE CANDY CANES AT BOTH TOP & BOTTOM!

Need white candy melts for centers.

Well…my oven maybe a little warmer than 300 degrees.

MELTED  QUICKLY!

A LITTLE large?

Hmmm…doesn’t quite look like the pinterest picture.

Hmmm.

So..use my fingers to “squish” the bottom & top

TO THE STICK!

OK..then

melt chocolate (microwave)

DO NOT BURN!

Go slow & stir often!

White chocolate SMEARED into the middle.

Yes, I dripped all over some.

YES, I used my FINGERS to get in

all the nooks & crannies!

And YES…my sprinkles look like a 5year old did them!

NOT EXACTLY like PINTEREST…

But I will bet

 the 20 kiddos

who come to the family cookie exchange,

Won’t CARE!

PS…They haven’t SEEN PINTEREST!

Yes…I am putting them into a “CUTE” basket….with foam…surrounded by Candy KISSES!

It will look great!

AND NO ONE,  will say a word!

If they do...

THEY GET TO HOST THE COOKIE EXCHANGE NEXT YEAR!

HA!

So…I love Pinterest…sort of

🙂

Nibits for Newbies 11.8.15

Nibits for Newbies 11.8.15

If it’s SUNDAY..
It’s time for
NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!
Today’s theme…
Veteran’s DAY!
We are a military family.
Army & Navy.
We have heard stories from WWII to Korea to today.
Great Grandpa’s, Grandpa’s, Dad’s, cousin’s, sons, daughter-in-law…
WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!
In MY classroom
I spend a lot of time discussing MY SON
ACTIVE US NAVY…
and why it is SOOO  important to say
“THANK YOU” for their service.
When he was on a 7 MONTH deployment…
He was married to an active US NAVY  wife
AND they had …MY GRANDCHILD!
( She is sooooo  cute!)
But he left them behind to live on a ship and PROTECT US!
So how can we say THANK YOU?
We send letters, pictures, stories, and cutsie art projects.
I try to send things at least once a month.
This month’s ideas….
( Pinterest is GREAT FOR THIS!)
Next   Month……
Just a little something to remind them of
All of us at home who CARE!
My son  is no longer on a ship…
so we send things to friends & family who are
ACTIVE soldiers & sailors.
AND
We send things to the local Veteran’s HOSPITAL.
All who serve and who have served…deserve a THANK YOU!
I searched GOOGLE for a local VA Hospital address..
takes a little searching, but time WELL spent!
ALL  will appreciate.
Parents who cannot ( or are not) with their own kids
appreciate a little art project or note from a child, any child.
A little smile, a little laugh, a warm fuzzy from home.
No need to put names on them.
Here are a few addresses …
To those Veteran’s ( active or inactive )
AND THEIR FAMLIES..
THANK  YOU!

Old McDonald..Ahem…AKA Farmer Without A Farm…HAS a Farm!

Old McDonald…ahem…FARMER WITHOUT A FARM…had a Farm…

Old McDonald had a farm…
( Song will be in your head ALL DAY)
But my HUBBY….AKA….FARMER WITHOUT A FARM
has made our backyard into a farm!
If you follow me…you know how MY farm grows!
(Type FARM in my search bar….WOWZA!)
So..updates..
The chickens are now…
IN PUBERTY!
(GREAT….Emotional UPS & DOWNS, LOUD squawking, EATING like PIGS!)
HAHA
They haven’t laid eggs yet…BUT I AM WAITING!
Hurry UP!
This  is  RAPUNZEL ( granddaughter’s named her )
This is SNOW WHITE..I know…
SHE had Black hair!
Sunflowers in bloom!
Harvesting seeds, peppers, tomatillos…YUMMY!
Tomatillos are like sour tomatoes.
They add great flavor to salsa!
Pumpkins  (2)  have turned orange.
Little on on the ground, just lovin life.
NOT ready …YET.
BIG ONE ( 10+ pounds )  is HANGING around!
LITERALLY!
Started growing in the tomotoes, so we made a sling for it!
LOVED IT!  Growing happily!
( Until we harvest..HAHA)
So what do we do with ALL the produce?
CAN  IT!
(Actually,,,hubby does)
LOTS of tomato sauce, salsa, and spaghetti sauces!
Next…my mom gave us the most beautiful PEACHES!
We will be sharing them at THANKSGIVING & CHRISTMAS!
(I am thinking fresh peach pie…YUMMY!)
And so..
Our little  gigantic gardens continue to grow.
We anticipate veggies until Thanksgiving!
Love California weather!
( Well, almost…we would LOVE LOTS of rain!)
Happy Fall ‘Yall !

The Importance of..Making Memories

The Importance of…..MAKING MEMORIES

What do YOU do to keep your memories?
Do you scrapbook?
Take LOTS of pictures?
Write in a Journal every night?
I have HUGE fears..
Fears of LOSING my memories.
Think “The Notebook”.
I don’t want to lose my feelings, my fun, my memories!
So?  What to do? What to do?
MAKE THEM LAST!
Make them EVERY DAY!
Never let it be a “ONE TIME” thing.
Relive them over & over!
This has been a hard week for NORCAL.
WE ARE ON FIRE!
Literally…
This fire (BUTTE FIRE) is too close to my family.
(I cringe as I write this..  too  close  to home!)
Think GOLD MINERS!
 MINER 49’ers!
YEP!
This is what is being destroyed by  this fire.
The Foothills. The small  mining towns. California HISTORY.
So sad..
You see…
My family does NOT have a good relationship with FIRE!
I carry many BAD memories of it!
In 1990..right after my sisters’ had moved home from college..
My parent’s house…
the house I had grown up in..
Burned to the GROUND!
(Well the red brick facade in the front was still standing)
1800 sq ft., 4 bedroom 2 bath, with a swimming pool, on 1/3 acre…
I did NOT live there ( Hubby & I had 3 boys under the age of 5 ),
BUT I was effected, A LOT!
When the roof caught fire…
I watched the ceiling fall in MY BEDROOM!
MY BEDROOM!
Not on TV, not in the movies, MY BEDROOM!
Fire is NOT my friend.
I watched my parents make split-second decisions
about which items they cherished the most!
What do you want the fire fighters to bring out?  NOW!
PICTURES….PICTURES…PICTURES
Family collections weren’t even considered.
Who cares about your clothes, blowdriers, shoes?
Just get out!
And they did.
ALL were fine.
 KINDA.
It took a long time to realize what had been taken
..yes  taken..by the FIRE.
“THINGS” can be replaced.
You can buy a bed, furniture, dishes, clothes, etc.
Think about your CHRISTMAS ornament collection.
The one’s your kids made in school, church, preschool.
GONE!
Cannot be remade.
Baby’s first Christmas only happens once.
I can purchase a new ornament..but it’s NOT the same.
I remember the Christmas after the fire…
(the fire was in Nov. 1990)
My mom bought a “FAKE” tree
(we never had a FAKE tree)
AND
we bought a BOX of ornaments.
We decorated the FAKE tree in the rental house..
SO instead of feeling beaten down, saddened to tears, what to do?
What to do?
BUY A CAMERA!
WHAT?
Buy a camera.
 A really GOOD ONE!
Take pictures!  A LOT!  Put them EVERYWHERE!
Look at them daily!
Giggle when you see the silly ones.
Smile when you see your family.
Dream when you see that “far away” twinkle in someone’s eyes!
You cannot STOP! You keep moving on!
You  REBUILD!
And that’s what my parents did.
We had my sister’s engagement party in a “rental house.”
Not in the the backyard of the house you had lived your whole life in!
It didn’t matter!
WE were ALL there! Together!
Making MEMORIES! New memories!
And so.. I try to forgive FIRE.
It did not CHOOSE  my parents’ home.
It happens. Now what?
Make NEW Memories!
And so today.. I DID!
This is my MEMORY wreath.
I  started  it 5 years ago.
Every year I add more grapevines
FROM  MY  GARDEN.
I grew them. I harvested the grapes. I pruned the vines.
It just reminds me of how much we have to
remember in a year.
I sat there staring at it.
Remembering ALL the things that have happened this year.
 Smiles & tears.
The giggles, the hard work, the fun we have had…
Never let a minute go by.
Take notes.
Write letters to YOURSELF!
Do whatever YOU need to to hold ON to the memories.
They are YOURS.
Never let go!
 P.S. Please..if you pray..
add the many people of Northern California
to your prayer list.
We need it!
And remember….

I Might WANNA “STAYCATION” 9.12.15

I Might WANNA “STAYCATION” 9.12.15

Fall Break in almost here!
I can hardly believe we have almost finished the first quarter ( 8 weeks ) of school!
At the end of the month..I HAVE 2 WEEKS VACATION!  YIPPEE!!
So we have been thinking..
DO WE WANT TO TAKE A FALL VACATION?
OR
Stay at home
for a
‘STAYCATION’?
OR BOTH????
Now that we are “empty nesters”,  we have choices to make!
Hubby & I are  contemplating BOTH!
We LOVE to travel!
See new things, meet new people, try new things!
We are the ones who DO EVERYTHING and come home to rest!
So???
What to do? What to do?
I vote BOTH!
Trip & Home..I think we will.
Trip?  Who knows? Short time…we shall see.
BUT..
STAYCATION…
Lots of things to LOVE in MY home ..
Here are 6 reasons why we should
STAY AT HOME… ( well, for at least SOME of it ).
We have HUGE Gardens!
We grow EVERYTHING!
Hubby & I Love working in the dirt! 🙂
My  PUMPKINS would  MISS  me!
Who would watch “Rapunzel & Snow White” dance when they go to bed?
We might need to pick MORE tomatoes!
(Last year we picked a tomato for THANKSGIVING dinner!)
Hubby might want to snooze in his hammock & I might need a dip on the SPA!
After all…it was 104 in NORCAL this week!
And..we always have home repairs we COULD do.
( Not always WANT to do…but we could!)
See…I spoke too soon!
I came home to glass sliding door
ON MY FLOOR!
OH NO!
It’s OK…..Hubby has got this one!
SO…I think I shall enjoy my FALL VACATION..
BOTH  at HOME & AWAY!
I wonder where we shall go?
Hmmm…
Hubby has some ideas…
I think I shall be
SURPRISED!
Enjoy   your  FALL vacation whether  at  home  or  away !

I Need to APOLOGIZE to my Gma & My MOM…

I Need to APOLOGIZE to my Gma & My MOM…

I am such a SLACKER!
I think I have it all together..
I DO NOT!
My Grandmother & MY MOM
raised a family, worked at home & outside the home,
and we always had stuff when we wanted it.
AND I NEVER ASKED HOW?
This is my GMA & GPA…
I miss them both.
They lived on a dairy.
My GPA taught me about cows, HARD work, & what “silage” tasted like! ICK!
My Gma always wore a dress & heels. She was a petite little thing.
She wore toilet paper around her hair at night, so she would look “good” in the morning.
My Gpa didn’t give us candy.
When we left his house, he would give us a teaspoonful of brown sugar
, from the jar in Gma’s kitchen.
Nothing fancy..but it meant EVERYTHING to us!
They owned a peach orchard.
 40 acres of peaches.
I never really thought about it when I was little.
It was just a “lot of trees”.
This is my MOM & Dad ( I just found this engagement pic.) HAHA
They worked hard.
My dad went to work every day.
Dressed in his suit & white shirt
( that my mom ironed..I know ..with an iron & ironing board! )
And my mom worked a self-owned business,
was ALWAYS there when we got home form school,
and helped us with EVERYTHING we ever did ( sports, clubs, school, etc).
And I never asked HOW?
How do you do it ALL?
And now this….
Both my GMA & My MOM canned fruits, made pickles, and baked goodies!
Now I don’t bake ( leave that gene to my sister, Susie).
I have NEVER made pickles..& probably won’t..BUT
I   CAN  FRUIT!
I CAN FRUIT, A LOT!
I  remember walking into GMA’s garage & seeing shelves FULL of canned goods.
I grabbed bottles of canned fuits from my mom’s shelves in our garage.
Peaches, pears, cherries, etc, etc, etc,,   whenever we wanted!
Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall
It didn’t matter…it was always there.
HOW????
I never asked.
So now..I apologize to GMA & MOM.
I should have asked to help you peel, or slice, or wash, or……..or….or……
But, I cannot take it back.
SO?
I will follow in your steps.
I will teach MY DAUGHTER to can!
And my granddaughters!
I will continue the family tradition.
Only…we will use the recipe on my laptop.
( I know GMA & MOM didn’t do that!)
So here was my day TODAY ( from start  to finish ).
Wash the jars ( hot water & heated dry) in dishwasher.
Wash..rinse…BLANCH (  Boil  whole peaches, then put in pan of ICE WATER!)
Their peels  just  slide right off!
Slice, Slice, slice!
Too hot to cook inside!
Set up our campstove OUTSIDE!
Pan on the left is a sugar/water mixture.
Cook the peaches in for a short time, then pour into jars!
Hubby is sooooo  good at this!
Then…
Boil in a water bath ( 25 minutes ) to seal.
 and…
VOILA!
There we go!
11 quarts of fresh canned peaches!
They will be sooo  good  this winter!
(Daddy gave us more peaches
…so I am thinking peach cobbler for dinner!)
or maybe…..
I SHOULD MAKE JAM!
Gma made jam……so did MOM….WOW!
I should THANK them.   🙂
