SUMMER! FINALLY! & A FREEBIE!! WAHOO!!!

Can you see my “HAPPY FACE?”
YES!
School is OUT for SUMMER!
Here in NorCal…it’s warming up, it’s DRY ( Drought ), & it’s TIME!
We are beginning our summer vacation..
Because we all know….
TEACHER’S DON’T DO ANYTHING IN THE SUMMER!
Really?????
It’s OK…I enjoy EVERY minute of it!
So my friends…a peak into my SUMMER …
Before we go any further…
I live in the SUBURBS of the Northern Calif. valley.
NOT ON A FARM..
We have neighbors on 3 sides…
My hubby, AKA…Farmer WITHOUT a Farm, LOVES to get his hands
DIRTY!
So I help..sometimes…most of the time…when I want to…
this weekend was the beginning.
Celery going to seed. I cut the tops off celery from the grocery store.
Root it in a “baby food” jar of water.
Plant it. Let it grow. Eat the stalks. When it goes to seed…Pull  it out, hang it upside down in a brown bag…shake!   The celery seeds will shake out of the dry flowers.
I use celery seed in salads..I also will save to plant next year!

Artichokes!
His “PAPA” plant (4 yrs old) has 6 artichokes right now!
Yummy! Dinner tonight!

Tomatoes.
We have 4 gardens right now. He has planted about 20 tomato plants!
( He cans his own salsa later in the summer). Lasts ALL Year!
Me? Not into HOT salsa..he also grows about 20 different varieties of peppers!
But..I LOVE  picante! We grow EVERYTHING to make our own salsa!

My yellow squash..not too happy..needs more sun!

Our newest members of the family!
Goldie & Blackie..original HUH!?
We have a chicken coop from last years’ chickens.
They got too loud for the neighbors & went to a friend’s farm.
We shall try again…different breed…maybe a little “QUIETER!”
And NOOOOOO  roosters!  Only hens in our hen house!
Love fresh eggs!

We live in grape country!
We planted grapes on our fence. We have 4 varieties.
LOVE ME SOME FRESH GRAPES!
I use them in juices too!

Today we harvested  GARLIC & ONIONS.
Here are garlic heads..about 15-20 cloves on each one.
Now to dry for a month or so…then to my kitchen!

Garlic..about 25  plants harvested.

ONIONS! We harvested about 200 onions.
Now to dry..then to my kitchen!

You know you have good soil when you have LARGE worms!
( Large worms = LOTS of castings (POOP) =  healthy plants!)
This one scared me…BIG DADDY
About 6-7″ long!

Our newest “FRIENDS”…
2 baby doves..not really BABIES…more like TEENAGERS!
and their MOM…
SHE still feeds them nightly on our fence.
( MOM….they are ready to leave…QUIT ENABLING them!)
So we listen to the birds…giggle at the chicks..and
enjoy the show!
That’s how I start my vacation!  How about YOU?
Thanks for hanging in here for the LONG post…
Just for YOU…A FREEBIE!
ENJOY!

Wow! What a wonderful unit on planting. The simple language and vocabulary words will be especially helpful for my English Learners. Thank you sooooo much for your generosity!
