Let me show you!


First… I got out my GUIDED READING “levels” FOLDER.
All students have a velcro name tag and I attach them into groups.
Moveable, fluid, ever changing.
I LOVE IT!

EVERY DAY!


So, I used her bookmark IN A SLEEVE, as an assessment.
Gotta know WHERE to START!
I took one bookmark & gave it to the student
to take home & practice.
Notice the “CIRCLED” words?
PRACTICE  MORE!


Then I made a TEACHER copy.
 This group has 4 students.
Each student has a different highlighted color.
I highlighted the words THEY need as a group.
During WORD WORK…they will come to ME to practice as a group.
I can see at a glance which words to focus on.

Did the same with other groups. 
I purchased 10 levels…enough for NOW!

I LOVE the 3 bookmarks to a page!
She did a great job!

I appreciate products that make MY LIFE easier!

Data is very important in education.
We as educator’s not only need to deliver the instruction, but we do have the need to ensure our student’s master and apply the knowledge we are delivering.

For me, it was a
CHANGE of  MINDSET.
When I change my lifestyle, I need a WHY?
Why am I doing this? Why is it needed? 
WHY?  WHY?  WHY?

BECAUSE.

Collecting data is NOT about the numbers.
It’s NOT about “judging” my teaching. It’s NOT about seeing 
HOW many of my students DID or DID NOT master a concept.

It’s about looking for those SMALL skills, those giant holes, those little tweeks that are missing FOR THE CHILD
What areas are missing…so I can fill them!

IT’S NOT ABOUT ME???

NOPE!

It’s about the KIDS!

Data is to help our kids.

OK.   So  HOW?

There are a MULTITUDE of  assessments that you can use. 
In this day and age, I bet your district has a LONG list of assessments they  want you to use.
USE them!

Don’t just give the test & move to the next lesson.
LOOK  AT  THE  DATA!

You might be surprised at what you see!

I recently gave a math assessment to my firsties.
We had spent 4-5 weeks (YES WEEKS) on place value!
Tens and ones.  Tens and ones.  
OVER  AND  OVER!

After my “district” math assessment,
I noticed a trend…
On 5-6 of the tests  ( 25%  of my class..)
they missed 3-4 questions about 
adding ten to a number.

WHAT? ADDING TEN IS EASY!

We had gone over tens & ones, tens & ones…
BUT…

I “assumed”
…remember what they say about 
ASSUME…

that it would be easy for them 
because they understood place value!

So…a week later of
SMALL  GROUP
math ..adding tens to numbers

SHAZAM!

100%  on the place value review test!
So what if I gave the review test again.
They didn’t get it the first time!

It is NOT important that 
OUR numbers
 look good to others!

What is important is
DO THE KIDS KNOW IT?

Knowledge vs. numbers.

WOW!
A New MINDSET!

Just a short note on a

 SUPER FUN GAME

to help your kiddos

practice spelling / vocabulary / HFW words!

Do you remember 

THE  MATCHING  GAME?

Well…. I have “tweaked” it for my classroom.

Materials needed:

2   colors   of    BLANK   PAPER!

Pencil

Dark  Crayon

THAT’S IT!

Easy  Peasy!

Now  What?

1.   Have  Kiddos  FOLD  their  paper  into 16  squares.

(  Fold it horizontal twice  &  Vertical  twice!)

2.  Use pencil to TRACE  the  fold lines.

(This ensures a BOX for kids to write their words in.)

3. I write the words on MY paper 

and use my DOC CAMERA for kids to see, so they can copy.

4.  Cut SQUARES apart into word cards.

5.  Kids stack their cards.

6. Find  a  PARTNER  with  different colored  cards.

7. They place ALL cards words DOWN.

8.  Rock, paper, scissors.  Winner  goes  first.

9. Turn over ONE of their cards & ONE of their partner’s cards.

10.  Read…read…read!  Do they MATCH?

11. If they match…they stack BOTH cards!

12. If not, turn them over and try again!

No WINNERS or LOSERS…

ALL DONE?     PLAY  AGAIN!  🙂

SO  FUN!

We usually have 6 spelling words.

I  ALWAYS  add  MORE!

I  am teaching  word  strategies.

NOT  MEMORIZING  FOR A TEST!

Keep  them learning!

Have FUN!

No More , How Do You SPELL..??? and a FREEBIE

Spelling.
( I know..I cringe at that word.)
Making sure each word is “perfect”.
Students who STOP writing a wonderful story,
because they can’t remember HOW to spell a word.
Just one word.
And then..they stop writing! UGH!
They ask themselves,
“What does it start with?”
Oh..I dunno…so where do they look?
What do they do?
ASK  THE  TEACHER!
NO!
Those DREADED words…
“HOW DO YOU SPELL…????”
Ugh!
We have gone over letter sounds, word families, vocabulary, picture prompts, word walls, word lists, dictionaries, pictionaries, and so on..and so on.
And still they ask.
So what is a teacher to do??
PINTEREST!
( The place where ALL questions CAN be answered!)
And so I search…
SO MANY CHOICES!
( And don’t EVEN get me started on WORD WORK!)
And so…what’s a teacher to do?
Create MY OWN!
My district has adopted a curriculum.
I have 18 boxes waiting for me to unpack!
My PD for this new curriculum is 5 days before I have students!
I probably won’t have time to REALLY dig into the program.
Surface teaching for a few weeks!
BUT…
My kiddos are ready… BEFORE I AM!
And so..
I create!
Here are a few of my newest
SPELLING   creations!
( I do have access to the word lists…so I am using them!)
If you do not have
CA   JOURNEYS
DO  NOT  FRET!
The word lists in this program can be used anywhere, anytime!
Homeschools, interventions, homework, practice pages!
Here is KINDERGARTEN

Here is  FIRST  GRADE
And  Grade  2

All of the lists are printed in black and white.
SAVES  ON  COLORED  INK!
( I print mine on colored paper!)
I print one copy for the student’s desk.
A little tape on top..and voila!
Instant word wall for writing!
(NO MORE …HOW DO YOU SPELL…)
The other copy I send home for homework each MONDAY!
They have to read & practice each night.
Spelling tests on FRIDAY!
I give “rewards” for 80% correct or higher!
I don’t expect perfection…just effort in their work.
I add these word lists to SPELLING CITY on our ipads.
(If  you don’t have SPELLING CITY for ipads…GET IT!) 🙂
They practice EVERY DAY!
They also must use the week’s spelling words in their journals.
They read their journals to a partner.
WOW!
 Spelling, reading, writing, word lists, &  homework!
I think we’ve got this!

This week’s theme…

Ok..
Have you ever PLAYED SCOOT???
Here is a game to get 100% of YOUR students ENGAGED!
My Kiddos LOVE  SCOOT  games..
Here are the basics:
Materials needed:
Game cards, task cards, pictures, flash cards, or multiple pages for review.
AND
A student page for responses.
Each student needs their OWN page.
Can be a pre-printed one, or blank.
The main idea is:
 The teacher places different “tasks” on student desks.
The student’s walk around the room and respond to  the task on their papers.
Some teacher use a timer ( 1 minute per “station”) or FREE FOR ALL!
MY KIDDOS LOVE LOVE LOVE this!
Here are some examples…
We used this packet to play.
The CLOCK cards are the packet. 
NO laminating needed!
I just place them in clear report sleeves…or Zip Lock bags when I need more!

Each card has a DIFFERENT  LETTER in the Top LEFT corner..
see the “V”????

Students walk around the classroom ( this time with a partner )
to find the cards.

We just used a blank page, folded it into 12 squares, and gave each one a LETTER.
I told them NOT to put their squares in ABC order.
WHY?  That way ALL kids are not at the same card at the same time!
Mix it up!

They found the 12 cards matching THEIR CHOSEN LETTERS!
We are working on time to the hour & half hour.
THEY LOVED THIS!
LOTS of discussion, helping each other, and giggles!

If it’s SUNDAY…
It’s time for
NIBITS FOR NEWBIES!
This week’s theme..
ASSESSMENTS!
I am getting ready for quarter 1 report cards. ( UGH!)
(Not my FAVORITE thing to do!)
So..we give an ELA reading & writing assessment from our reading program.
This “benchmark” assessment populates the report card automatically.
The report card itself is designed “around” the assessment.
The CCSS  standards are “interwoven” into the assessment.
What that means is, I cannot verify FROM THIS ASSESSMENT if a student has mastered a common core standard or not.
When I give my grades, I want to be sure I am accurate
& I want parents to know what we
( ALL OF US ) are working on!
So…MY TURN!
I give each of my student’s
INDIVIDUAL assessments to determine if they have mastered Quarter 1 CCSS standards
OR
if they are in DIRE need of MORE HELP!
(From me, an assistant, intervention teacher, parent, etc)
So here are a few examples of the assessments I GIVE…
Running Record
 As they are reading I record what words they can read ( with a check mark) and missed words           ( looking for what skills did they usse & what are they lacking).
I check their independent reading forms from IN CLASS & AT HOME.
We have BOTH.
I check their past spelling tests. Are they working on words families?
Do they know their HFW?
( Usually kids who DO NOT know their HFW are struggling readers.)
What DO they know about about reading?
 And….letters & sounds…
 We assess writing.
Can they write a complete sentence?
Capitals? Punctuation? Topic Sentence?  Handwriting?
 And this one I HAD to do this week!
Do they know the KINDERGARTEN HFW?
Our program moves on….very little kinder review.
So…The HIGHLIGHTED words are the words this student DOES NOT KNOW!
Sent home to practice every day for 20 school days.
Then,  assess again!
So …crazy times!
Relax …remember…it’s about helping kids!
IF I can find out what they DON’T KNOW
I can help them learn it
so they can always
GET   BETTER!
